Description
A Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator (VCXO) is an electronic oscillator that uses a crystal to determine its output frequency. The frequency of the VCXO can be adjusted by applying a varying DC voltage, which allows for precise control over the oscillation frequency. This makes VCXOs particularly useful in applications where frequency stability and control are critical.
Working Principle
The working principle of a VCXO involves a crystal oscillator, a varactor diode, and supporting circuitry. The crystal oscillator provides a stable frequency reference, while the varactor diode allows for frequency modulation by changing its capacitance in response to a control voltage. This change in capacitance alters the resonant frequency of the crystal, thereby adjusting the output frequency of the oscillator. The smooth and monotonic voltage-to-frequency curve is a key design consideration for VCXOs, ensuring precise frequency control without discontinuities .
Applications
VCXOs are commonly used in networking and communication equipment, where precise frequency control is essential for maintaining signal integrity and synchronization. They are also found in test equipment, where accurate frequency generation is necessary for testing and measurement purposes .
Advantages over other Oscillators
VCXOs offer a higher degree of frequency stability compared to voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), which are less stable due to their reliance on electronic circuits for frequency generation. The use of a crystal in VCXOs provides inherent stability, making them more suitable for applications requiring precise frequency control .
Limitations
One limitation of VCXOs is their reduced frequency stability when the oscillator circuit is modified to allow for significant frequency deviation. This degradation, known as "de-Qing," affects the crystal's stability in terms of frequency versus temperature, aging, and short-term stability. Additionally, this can impact the associated jitter and phase noise performance .
Considerations
When selecting a VCXO, it is important to consider factors such as initial costs, operating expenses, and maintenance requirements. The stability and accuracy of the VCXO are critical, especially in applications where precise frequency control is necessary. Durability and the potential need for replacement or maintenance should also be evaluated, as these factors can influence the overall cost of ownership and reliability of the oscillator in its intended application .
