Description
Bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes are designed to protect electronic circuits from voltage spikes by clamping the voltage to a safe level. These devices are capable of providing protection when current moves in both directions, making them suitable for handling both positive and negative voltage transients.
Working Principle
Bidirectional TVS diodes operate by routing the excess current generated during a transient voltage event to the ground, similar to a clamper circuit. When the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the TVS, the device conducts the current to ground, thereby protecting the circuit. Once the voltage returns to normal levels, the TVS diode stops conducting, allowing the circuit to resume normal operation. This ability to handle bidirectional current makes them particularly useful in applications where voltage transients can occur in both directions, providing comprehensive protection.

Bidirectional TVS diodes are commonly used in applications where protection from both positive and negative voltage spikes is necessary. Specific examples include:

Advantages over other Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes (TVS)
Bidirectional TVS diodes offer several advantages over unidirectional TVS diodes:
