8x8 IC Analog Crosspoint Switches
Reviewed by: Mohsen Mostafaei, consulting engineer
Description
An 8x8 IC Analog Crosspoint Switch is an integrated circuit that enables the routing of eight analog input signals to any of eight output channels through a matrix architecture. This solid-state switching solution provides non-blocking signal routing capabilities, allowing any input to be connected to any output simultaneously, with multiple connections possible at the same time. The device functions as a complete switching matrix contained within a single chip, typically handling analog signals within specified voltage ranges.
Working Principle
The switch operates using an array of CMOS transmission gates arranged in a matrix configuration, where each intersection point represents a potential connection between an input and output channel. These transmission gates are controlled by digital signals stored in an internal register, which can be programmed through a serial or parallel interface. When a connection is enabled, the corresponding transmission gate turns on, creating a low-impedance path between the selected input and output. The matrix architecture allows for multiple simultaneous connections, with each crosspoint capable of being independently controlled.
Applications
These switches are extensively used in automated test equipment for semiconductor testing, where multiple test signals need to be routed to different pins of the device under test. In professional audio equipment, they serve as signal routers in mixing consoles and patch bays. Medical imaging systems employ these switches for multiplexing multiple sensor inputs in ultrasound equipment. Telecommunications systems use them in line cards for voice and data routing. They're also crucial in industrial process control systems for sensor signal routing and in instrumentation systems for signal routing between various measurement devices and data acquisition components.
Limitations
The switches exhibit finite on-resistance, typically ranging from 10 to 100 ohms, which can affect signal integrity in low-impedance circuits. They also have bandwidth limitations, usually up to a few hundred megahertz, making them unsuitable for very high-frequency applications. Crosstalk between channels can become significant at higher frequencies, typically increasing above -60dB as frequency increases. The switches also have a limited voltage handling capability, typically restricted to ±15V or less, which can be problematic in high-voltage applications. Additionally, they can introduce charge injection when switching, which can cause glitches in sensitive analog circuits.
Considerations
The initial cost of implementing 8x8 IC Analog Crosspoint Switches is relatively high compared to discrete switching solutions, with prices ranging from $20 to $100 per chip depending on specifications. Operating expenses are generally low due to minimal power consumption, typically less than 100mW. Durability is excellent, with most devices rated for millions of switching cycles, though reliability can decrease in high-temperature environments above 85°C. Accuracy is primarily determined by the on-resistance variation across temperature and signal range, typically ±20% over the full operating range. Maintenance costs are minimal as these are solid-state devices with no mechanical wear, though system calibration may be required periodically to compensate for aging effects.
