Part Overview

This section provides background needed to better understand the rest of this Field Guide. More importantly, this background provides necessary foundations on which to build the organization's data quality program. The first chapter (Chapter 14 ) defines data, data quality, other important terms. Dry as definitions can be, most people have entrenched, though not well thought out, ideas about these concepts. Getting people to think more broadly about and adopting common definitions of key terms is no small feat.

A second chapter (Chapter 15 ) develops the concept of a second-generation data quality system. "Those organizations with the best quality data make use of these systems. They employ a number of common elements, each crafted to suit their particular circumstances. These common elements are the subjects of Sections E, F, and G.

The third chapter (Chapter 16 ) describes the so-called "customer-supplier model," perhaps the most important organizing framework for all of quality management.

The concept of "data" can be tricky. Indeed, many competing definitions (such as "data are the raw materials for information") miss the structure inherent in data. For the purpose of this Field Guide, "data" (or a "collection of data," etc.) consist of two interrelated components, "data models" and "data values."
