Data Quality: The Field Guide

A total of seventy-one field tips have concluded chapters of this Field Guide. Sixteen have been selected as the most important, useful, or frequently used and are presented for ready reference in Figure 36.1.
Field Tip 1.1 : An organization's most senior leader must not delegate responsibility for data quality. The losses due to poor quality are simply too great. Fortunately, high-quality data earns enormous returns.
Field Tip 6.1 : Anyone who either uses or creates data must be concerned about their quality. No one is left out. No one in any industry nor government. No one at any level of management. No job category And the impact of data quality is just as great in private life as well.
Field Tip 31.1 : The First Principle of Data Quality Management: Assign responsibility for the quality of data to those who create them. If this is not possible, assign responsibility as close to data creation as possible.
Field Tip 13.1 : First, prevent future errors, then clean up existing errors. Unless circumstances are dire, resist efforts to compromise on this point.
Field Tip F.1 : Data are either created inside the organization or obtained from outside. Apply supplier management to data obtained from outside and information chain management created inside.
Field Tip 33.1 : Recognize that all aspects of data management, and especially data quality have social dimensions. These "soft" issues can be the "hardest" to resolve.
