Chapter 10: Learning Activities

This chapter presents all the learning activities identified in the training designs found in Chapters 7, 8 and 9. Each learning activity description includes the following information:

  • Objective(s). The objective identifies how participation in the activity will help the participants. Most objectives address cognitive learning (for example, learning about the history of the organization). Some objectives are targeted toward behaviour (for example, locating a specific item). Finally, a few learning activities have affective objectives (for example, heightening the new employee's awareness and sensitivity about appropriate dress).

  • Materials. Included in the list is everything the trainer needs for a specific activity. The master copy of a required handout or helpful tool appears at the end of the activity or can be printed from the appropriate .pdf file on the accompanying CD. For some activities, handouts included in the text and on the CD will have to be adapted to fit the organization. Programme facilitators or guest presenters must provide handouts that are very specific to the organization (for example, mission statement, employee handbook, product information).

  • Time. This defines the total amount of time needed to complete the activity, including its introduction, the actual experience and its question-based discussion following the experience.

  • Preparation. This section offers brief instructions on what the facilitator needs to do to prepare for the activity. Possible activities include copying handouts, preparing flipchart pages, making slides, or gathering...
