Learning Activity 10-3: Representative Items

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this activity is to help participants introduce themselves in a fun and nonthreatening way.

MATERIALS

The materials needed for this activity are

  • CD

    PowerPoint slide or transparency 7-6

  • PowerPoint Item

    one small toy for each participant (variation).

TIME

  • 10 15 minutes

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Ask participants to select an item from their briefcases, purses, pockets, or wallets that they believe represents who they are or represents an important aspect of their lives.

  2. After everyone has selected an item, have the participants take turns showing their item and explaining why that item represents them.

VARIATION

  1. Instead of having participants choose an item, randomly give each one a toy that he or she will use to reveal something about himself or herself. If the group is small, you can place all the toys on a table and ask participants to select one.

  2. Ask participants to spend a minute observing their toys and getting acquainted with them.

  3. Next, explain that you want them to think about how the toy they selected represents them as a new employee.

  4. Ask for a volunteer to share his or her insight with the rest of the group. (If the group is large, you may want to create several small groups.) Continue soliciting volunteers until everyone has had an opportunity to participate.

  5. Discuss the activity by asking how they felt about using a toy to represent themselves. What did they learn about themselves? What did they learn about each other?
