Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 The Changing Environment
Rapid and dramatic changes are taking place in today's society. Not least is the evolution of the Information Age, in which the role of the telecommunications, Internet, computing and broadcast/media industries is expanding to unprecedented levels. The amount of data being generated, and the desire to gain access to this information, are expanding beyond recognition. The Information Age will have an impact on society similar to the industrial revolution of the 1800s, transforming working practices and social behaviour.
Information Age customers are demanding increasing levels of value, choice and mobility and they are becoming much more global in their outlook. They expect greater influence over service provision and a higher degree of control over their services. Competition amongst suppliers of services is intense. Many joint ventures/mergers are taking place and the number of niche suppliers is expanding rapidly.
1.2 The Network Response
Responding to these ever more sophisticated needs is indeed a challenge. The key to providing services to customers is the establishment of a flexible, secure and high-functionality network.
In the past, network technologies and service provision have been inextricably mixed, resulting in slow and expensive evolution. Modifying a service, or introducing a new service, required changes to numerous network elements.
