Hardware and Configuration Issues and Efficiency
In Chapter 1 , we determined that we must have a stable platform upon which to collect performance-oriented data and make decisions regarding the practicality of various hardware alternatives. In this chapter, we explore the economies of scale and performance improvements you can easily realize by proper hardware configuration.
Tip
Enhance your system's overall effectiveness by understanding your hardware's capabilities.
If you are satisfied with your hardware configuration, consider this lesson I have learned: You can significantly enhance your system's overall effectiveness, with minimal effort, by fully understanding your hardware's capabilities. To accomplish this, take the following steps:
?
Prepare to open all of those free hardware and systems catalogs and manuals that you have been stacking on the shelf.
?
Determine the model number of the configuration that you have within your data center, which may not be so easy. If you bought your equipment more than five years ago, it may be obsolete and may not be specified any longer in the most recent catalogs. Therefore, it may be difficult to determine the actual packaged configuration. If this is the case, you generally can call field service, who should be able to help you with the determination. If you bought a customized configuration, instead of a standard one, obtain all of the model numbers from the individual hardware components.
?
Once you have your package identification or component numbers, refer to...
