Managing System Resources
Managing System Resources
We discussed memory resources and performance management philosophy in Chapter 3 . In this chapter, we will discuss several other major resources:
?
the CPU and
?
the I/O subsystem (with other peripheral devices); disks are a major component affecting performance.
One of these components is usually the major bottleneck in a performance problem. The job of the systems manager or analyst is determining which is creating the bottleneck and attempting to rectify the situation.
You should follow the earlier recommendations for periodic tuning reviews. In addition, you should gather performance statistics on a regular basis. This allows you to become familiar with the "normal" behavior of the system and recognize changes when they occur.
In the sections which follow, we will discuss the remaining resources and discuss appropriate monitoring procedures.
