Chapter 4: System Generation (SYSGEN)
SYSGEN Facts
The system manager uses the System Generator (SYSGEN) utility to assist in managing the hardware and software configurations. Typically, this utility's functions are used to:
? Manipulate system parameters in the running system on an emergency basis. This approach should only be done after careful consideration and by a method that leaves a hard-copy trail. The only time you should consider changing system level parameters on the fly is when an extreme condition has arisen and, without drastic action, the system or cluster will crash. Otherwise, all system parameter manipulation should be done via AUTOGEN, as discussed in the next chapter .
? Connect and load device drivers up through the later versions of OpenVMS. In current versions, the connection and loading of device drivers has been relegated to the SYSMAN utility. If you load device drivers directly during your start-up routines, you will have to change the Digital Command Language (DCL) programming to use the SYSMAN interface.
? Create and install page and swap system files. Typically, the system manager does not use the SYSGEN utility directly to perform this task. Instead, the "SWAPFILES.COM" command is used. This command procedure is supplied by Digital and is found in SYS$UPDATE.
? Set up an alternate start-up command procedure. This command procedure is the site-independent, start-up file supplied by Digital. Unless you have a very specialized installation, I do not recommend that you set up your own because that makes...
