Chapter 11: OpenVMS Version 6.0 - Version 7.0
Overview
OpenVMS Version 6.0 was released in the Spring of 1993; Version 6.1 in April of 1994; Version 6.2 in May of 1995, and Version 7.0 in January of 1996. Since many OpenVMS customers are still using Version 5.5-2, I have included in this chapter the new features from these releases that may have a bearing on either system or cluster performance management to assist you in your upgrade decision making process. There are a number of new features that will be important for you to understand before your production systems are upgraded from the older OpenVMS versions. These new releases have a large number of changes and enhancements and include such functionality as:
?
better system and I/O performance
?
better auditing
?
object protection
?
protected subsystems
?
enhanced security utilities
However, since this book focuses on system management and performance effects, I will mostly discuss these new features. I have found that many systems are still at Version 5.5-2 of OpenVMS and data processing management is studying the feasibility of upgrading from VAX to Alpha based systems before making the upgrade decision. Because major software and/or hardware changes are difficult to manage, I have included the latest versions of OpenVMS with the discussed features. Thus if the newer functionality is really desired, you will know what software upgrades need to be performed.
