Polycenter Performance Advisor (DECPS)
The Polycenter Performance Tools include:
?
a data collector,
?
a performance advisor,
?
a capacity planner, and
?
an accounting utility.
This section is primarily devoted to using the performance advisor to analyze system and cluster performance, from a windowing workstation via its point-and-click interface.
The DECPS Advisor utility is essentially the replacement tool for System Performance Monitor (SPM) and VAX Performance Advisor (VPA). This tool offers the same reporting ability as these other products, in addition to an excellent graphing system. It was obviously set up for use with a windowing type of work station, which is used to produce reports, graphs, and analysis displays from performance data gathered daily.
The database for all nodes is a centralized relational database that uses Digital's Relational Database Manager (RDB) run-time system; this is included at no extra charge with all releases of OpenVMS. The power of this windowing interface is that a system manager can easily indicate subsets of information and vector in to focus on an individual problem. At the same time that you are justifying an extra workstation to be used as an aid to diagnostics and system analysis, don't forget to include a request for the following:
?
a color monitor,
?
a postscript printer (with lots of memory), and
?
at least 16 MB of memory for your station.
If you do not have a workstation, you will have to use the DCL interface, which...
