ACL (Access Control List) Added in OpenVMS Version 5 to allow greater control resource level security; e.g., an ACL may be emplaced on a file or a queue to either allow or exclude specific types of access. (Chapter 10 )
ACP (Ancillary Control Process) Type of process typically system related and generally written to assist a device driver. Operates outside of the operting system kernal but interfaces to it via system service calls or specialized interfaces. Several examples of ACPs are the magnetic tape ACP, which is in charge of maintaining the file positioning on the tape, or the network ACP, which helps with establishing virtual links across the network, routing, etc. (Chapters 2 , 7 , 8 )
Area Region of an indexed sequential file which contains information on the control of a file and the placement of its associated data. Areas may be either index or data related. (Chapter 9 )
AST (Asychronous System Trap) Typically this concept refers to what is generically known as a condition handler that happens in parallel with the current processing context resulting from such events as interrupts. An AST may be initiated at any point in time and is usually not dependent on any specific main line code. The system UAF limits the number of these that may be simultaneously outstanding, stacked, as a process resource. An example of this type of limit might be I/O timer settings, etc. (Chapters 2
