Chapter 5: The AUTOGEN Procedure
How To Use AUTOGEN
AUTOGEN is a command procedure that Digital supplies to customers to assist the system manager with:
? Setting system parameter values,
? Configuring the page, swap, and dump files, and
? Managing the installed image list (SYS$MANAGER:VMSIMAGES.DAT).
AUTOGEN resides in the SYS$UPDATEdirectory. Although AUTOGEN is an essential system management tool, it has been known to change parameters, based on its algorithms, that you may not want to have changed. The AUTOGEN user must be aware of the ramifications, before employing the full functionality of this utility. However, this utility has been consistently improved with each new release. The most current version performs reasonably well and will not change a parameter that might render your system unbootable.
To invoke AUTOGEN, type the following at the command line prompt:
$ @SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN [start-phase] [end-phase] [execution-mode]
(The different phase parameters are explained in the AUTOGEN Phases Section.)
AUTOGEN Features
AUTOGEN features include:
? Feedback mechanisms
? SAVE_FEEDBACK option to SHUTDOWN.COM
? Alternate start-up procedure
? Current parameter values saved before they are updated
? MODPARAMS parameter passing mechanism
? Secondary page and swap file sizing
? SYS$SYSTEM:AGEN$ADDHISTORY.TMP
? AGEN$ADDHISTORY.DAT
? AGEN$INCLUDE_PARAMS (filespec) includes a file, defined by "filespec," of parameter definitions to submit to AUTOGEN.
The files are used with the feedback mechanism and have been added so the "ADD_" values from MODPARAMS.DAT and VMS PARAMS.DAT are not accumulated across AUTOGEN runs.
