Chapter 3: VMS Concepts and VMS Performance Management
Overview
Tuning VMS is a complex task involving multiple sessions to monitor performance and perform capacity planning. You should not expect to become an expert just by attending a single class or reading a book. Instead, you should build experience over time with your specific installation. I strongly suggest that every site have a different set of performance and tuning requirements that are consistent with the general application's environment.
For those of you that do not have a specific or constant application mix at your facility, I suggest that you quantify the resource needs of the majority of your users and set up the system accordingly. In this chapter, I offer suggestions for making your systems and clusters work more efficiently. These suggestions should be implemented only one at a time, and their associated effects should be studied carefully.
To Tune or Not to Tune?
The main question with regard to VMS Performance Management is, "Does the system need to be tuned, or will it run just as well without tuning at all?" Having done system management reviews at many sites, I have concluded that some amount of tuning is inevitable.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was an automatic way to set certain values, such that your system would adjust dynamically to the work load? If you follow the literature in the technical press and third-party reviews, you might notice a trend toward automatic tuning. Regardless of the number of automatic...
