Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering: Design and Construction

Example of a Location Map for a Preliminary (Feasibility) Geotechnical Report
The final chapter of this book, deals with the preparation of reports and file management, evaluation of reports, and strategies to avoid civil liability. There are numerous types of geotechnical reports that are prepared for private clients or public agencies. As indicated in Figure 1.11, two common types of reports are preliminary (also known as feasibility) reports, required at the completion of the site investigation, and final grading reports, required on completion of the grading operations.
When preparing reports, it is best to follow standard guidelines. For example, App. B presents the Technical Guidelines for Soil and Geology Reports (from the Orange County Grading Manual). This document provides a detailed description of the required elements of preliminary and grading reports for Orange County, California. This document can be used as a guide during the preparation of the geotechnical report. As indicated in App. B. in California the reports usually have to be prepared jointly by the geotechnical engineer and engineering geologist. The guidelines for report preparation in App. B have been divided into six different parts, as follows:
Part I Single-Family Dwellings (flatland). Identifies the report content for precise grading permits on single-family dwellings in flatland areas (see Sec. D, App. B).
Part II Single-Family Dwellings (hillside). Identifies the report content for precise grading permits on single-family dwellings in hillside areas (additive to the requirements of Part...
