INDUCTIVE REACTANCE OF TWO-WIRE TRANSMISSION LINE

INDUCTIVE REACTANCE OF TWO-WIRE TRANSMISSION LINE

Calculate the inductive reactance of 10 mi (16.1 km) of a two-conductor transmission line (Fig. 9.1), where D=8 ft (2.44 m) and a=0.1 in. (2.54 mm) at a frequency of 60 Hz (377 rad/s).

Calculation Procedure

1. Calculate the Geometric Mean Radius

The GMR is r ?=(0.7788)(2.54 10 3)=0.001978 m.

2. Calculate L T

L T=(4 10 ?7)ln( D/ r ?)=(4 10 ?7)ln(2.44/0.001978)=28.5 10 7 H/m.

3. Calculate Inductive Reactance X L

X L=(377)(28.5 10 ? 7H/m)(16.1 10 3 m)=17.3 ?.

Related Calculations. A larger conductor and/or smaller conductor spacing reduces the inductive reactance.
