Bollards

Bollards are structures used to restrict access, improve security, and landscape property. While many bollards provide aesthetic benefits, typically, bollards are used to protect pedestrians and buildings from vehicles and military installations from attack. They are also used to secure ships and boats to piers and docks. Some bollards are cylindrical and have a domed, angled, or flat cap. Others are square or shaped like spheres, but solidly anchored in the ground. Bollards can be installed individually, in a group, or as part of a larger security system. Stationary bollards provide a constant barrier while retractable bollards permit authorized entry. Folding bollards are hinged at the base so that they can lay flat when not in use. 

Bollards are available in a variety of sizes, colors, materials, and finish options. Concrete and steel bollards are used for security purposes. Aluminum bollards are used in landscaping and lighting applications, and as decorative rail supports. Cast iron bollards are also used in landscaping applications, as well as for mooring ships. Generally, bollards made from chrome-plated steel are used for aesthetic appeal. Rubber is used to manufacturer flexible bollards, while plastic bollards are made of composite or recycled materials.

Bollards vary in terms of features. Some bollards are designed with integral light fixtures, speakers, battery backups, and auxiliary generators. Others are seated in fitted tubes that can be removed from the ground to allow access. Flexible bollards bend when affected by force. Removable plastic covers can be replaced when damaged or for aesthetic reasons. Crash-rated bollards can withstand vehicular impact and are used in applications requiring high levels of security, such as government buildings, prisons, corporate headquarters, airports, and power generation facilities. 

Retractable bollards require adherence to a preventive maintenance schedule that includes the periodic inspection and testing of mechanical and electrical systems. Retractable bollards can be operated manually, electrically, pneumatically, or hydraulically in order to respond to a wide range of security specifications and design requirements. The U.S. Department of State certifies bollards for use in its embassies and other facilities. Bollards used in military and security applications are designed to stop most vehicles completely and continue to operate after impact.
