Equipment Types
   Equipment Types:
   Your choices are...
Ball / Media Mill       Milling equipment that reduces particle size by tumbling a feed with grinding media such as balls, rods or other shapes.  Ball mills are typically wet, batch units.  Water or another liquids and additives aid the grinding process by reducing friction, deflocculating or cooling.  Media mills are also used to disperse a powder into a liquid product such as pigment in a paint base. Motion is imparted to the media through tumbling or rotating the vessel, stirring rods or vibration. Also known as pebble, rod, tube, compartment, tumbling, vibratory, stirred, dispersion, conical or tri-cone mills.
Cone / Gyratory Crusher       Coarse crushers consist of a cone shape bowl with a gyrating central head.  Feed is crushed between the cone and head.  Dish and puck mills could be considered a laboratory version of this type of mill.
Granulators / Cutter / Screen Mill       Dicers, cutters, crushers, power graters or other mills to produce a uniformly sized product or granules. Some granulators may use a rotating knifes while other types may employ a crushing or shearing action against an integrated screen or grate to control product granule size.
Disk Attrition Mill       The double disk mill, disk mill or attrition mill is a modern version of the ancient buhrstone mill where the stones are replaced with opposing disks or plates.  The disks may be grooved, serrated or spiked.
Dispersion / Colloid / 3-Roll Mill       Colloid mills utilize discs or rotors that spin at very high speeds in a liquid media.  The shearing action from the high speeds and small gap between the rotor and stator or chamber provides emulsification or dispersion.  The rotors often have a serrated outer surface.  Some dispersion mills with larger gaps also use fine beads within the liquid to enhance dispersion. Roller mills or 3-roll mills disperse and refine a fine powder or pigment into a liquid by passing the paste between a series of rolls rotating at different speeds.  Three roll, colloid or other dispersion mills are commonly applied in paint, resin and adhesive applications.
Jet / Fluid Energy Mill       Mills for fine grinding where a stream or jet of feed particles is impacted against another jet (opposed jet type) or a chamber wall.   Many jet mills incorporate an integral classifier.
Hammer / Cage Mill       Impact mills that utilize fixed or swinging hardened steel hammers, chain or a cage.  Depending on the size or configuration, hammer mills are utilized for coarse crushing to fine milling.  With swinging hammer type mills, the hammers can bounce and prevent a jam when a mill is fed with too quickly or with feed that is too large.  Hammer crushers and cage mills are available in vertical and horizontal rotor configurations with one to many rows of hammers.
Impact Mill / Crusher / Breaker       Impact where feed material is crushed or broken down by impact against a surface or a bed of feed material.  The feed material may be propelled by gravity or by a rotating impeller or rotor.  The impellers or rotors can be vertically or horizontally orientated.  Vertical impact mills, cage mills, Bradford breakers, hammer mills, granulators are usually classified as types of impact mills.
Pin / Universal Mill       Pin mills utilize a rotor with one or more rows of rods that impact and/or propel particles into stationary pins or surfaces.   Universal mills have interchangeable rotors that allow different types of materials to be handled on the same machine.  Various rotor configuration as possible such as pin mills, wing beater, cross beaters, blast rotor or grinding disc.  Many pin mills, cross beaters and universal mills falls into the category of high speed rotor pulverizers or disintegrators.  They tend to produce a finer product compared to coarse crushers or impactors.
Roll Crusher       Mills for intermediate grinding where feed is crushed between the nip of two rolls or between a single roll and a fixed surface.  The rolls can be serrated, toothed or smooth.  Rolls crushers tend to produce weaker shaped product particles compared to impact mills.
Shredder / Knife / Disc Mill       Mills for shredding fibrous or tough materials such as wood products, cellulose, rubber or polymers.  Hog or knife mills are also used for shredding.
Vertical Roller / Dry Pan       Mills that use a vertically orientated crushing wheel or muller that revolves around a solid or perforated pan, or screen.  Alternately, the pan can rotate or both the rollers and pan or grinding table can rotate.  Also known as vertical roller mills, horizontal roller mills, ball and amp; ring, ring-roller, chasers, pan crushers, bowl mills, screen mills or mullers.  These mills are often used in foundry type and mineral or ore processing applications.  Their advantage is they can reduce a relatively coarse feed to a coarse powder in one step (e.g., minus 2 inch feed to -20 mesh product).
Other       Pulp beater mills or other mills not listed.
