An analytical technique in which a plasma is generated by an induction coil operating at frequencies of 4 to 50 MHz. The oscillating magnetic field induces an electron and ion current which generates a temperature of 6000 C or more in the argon gas that is flowing through the induction coil. A sample is introduced into the plasma. At the high temperatures, the compounds in the sample are broken down into excited atoms, many of which emit light. The wavelength of the emitted light can be analysed allowing simultaneous analysis of a wide range of elements, particularly the metallic elements. This is known as ICP-OES (optical emission spectroscopy).
The use of ICP to generate ions that are then analysed by mass spectrometry.
