FAST Creativity & Innovation: Rapidly Improving Processes, Product Development and Solving Complex Problems

Up to this point, we have talked about a number of things that pertain to FAST, but we have not established a procedure to follow. We will now talk about the first 11 steps of the FAST procedure. As we do this, we will first apply the first 10 steps to Project 1, which is an incandescent lightbulb. Then I will show you how to apply Step 11. The main reason for selecting this project is to demonstrate how to construct a logic diagram in the form of a FAST Tree, which was introduced in Chapter 4. Then we will convert the FAST Tree into a FAST Diagram. No attempt is made to be creative as the diagram is being constructed other than naming the initial functions and answering the Why-How Logic Questions.
Step 1 of the procedure is to select a subject or project to analyze. Chapter 5 presented five different methods of accomplishing this step and five projects were identified. In this and the next four chapters, the various steps of the FAST procedure are demonstrated for each of these projects. The five methods of selecting a project are listed in Figure 8.1.
| Method 1 | Write down any subject, object, part, assembly, product, procedure, or process that you can describe or itemize. |
| Method 2 | Write one, two, or three sentences about your project. |
| Method 3 | Whenever a team is assigned to analyze a product or a piece of equipment which... |
