FAST Creativity & Innovation: Rapidly Improving Processes, Product Development and Solving Complex Problems

This chapter uses a very different example than the previous chapters. It ventures into human relationships of feelings toward each other rather than examples of hardware or procedures. It demonstrates the versatility of FAST to take on practically any subject that can be conceived. The example used in this chapter could have been among friends, co-workers, teammates, or any similar relationship. As a learning exercise, the example used here is a fictitious Western family where family members have equal rights with each other. It is recognized that some cultural customs may not identify with a family as thus presented; however, the principles of developing a FAST Diagram for a very different subject can be learned from this example.
We begin by taking two short sentences about respect and love for each other and developing a logic diagram that expands to 23 functions toward fostering better relationships among people. Twenty-eight other functions were formulated by brainstorming just one function in the primary path. In addition, Step 13 of the FAST procedure adds an additional 13 functions that bring the total to 64 functions. Many more could be formulated, but this is sufficient to demonstrate how a few facts can quickly be creatively expanded by applying the FAST Creativity technique. This chapter also presents a discussion on how to utilize a thesaurus as an aid in naming functions.
