FAST Creativity & Innovation: Rapidly Improving Processes, Product Development and Solving Complex Problems

At this point in the analysis, you should have at least two new higher level functions. These new functions formulated during Step 5, along with your initial basic function, should be used to create your higher level functions list. From this list, you once again select the function you think is the basic function andinsert that function into the following Basic Function Determination Question to determine if it is indeed the new basic function:
| Q | If this function didn't have to be performed, would any of the other (higher level) functions still have to be performed? |
As soon as the basic function has been determined, move on to Step 7.
From the list of five functions in Figure 8.7, we select the function that appears to be the highest level. "Make life more enjoyable" appears to be that function. Therefore, we insert it in the Basic Function Determination Question, which reads as follows:
| Q | If make life more enjoyable didn't have to be performed, would any of the other functions still have to be performed? |
| A | No |
Therefore, "make life more enjoyable" is the new basic function.
