Bistatic Radar, 2nd Edition

Chapter 12: Special Concepts and Applications

OVERVIEW

Throughout this book, bistatic radar concepts such as forwardscatter fences, clutter tuning, hitchhiking, passive situation awareness, over-the-shoulder operation, range extension, and counter-retrodirective jammer operation have been discussed briefly, but not analyzed in any detail. Many of these concepts are summarized in Table 4.1, which defines their operating regions (ovals of Cassini) and transmitter type (dedicated, cooperative, and noncooperative). The purpose of this chapter is to assemble available information on these concepts and to analyze their utility using range, doppler, and area relationships, as well as target radar cross section and clutter models developed in previous chapters. [*]

The element common to ail of these bistatic radar concepts is, again, geometry: In each concept a particular transmitter-receiver geometry is selected to develop some unique performance capability. In the case of clutter tuning, both geometry and the separate velocity vectors of the transmitter and receiver are exploited. Some concepts require a dedicated transmitter; others hitchhike off a monostatic radar. Some operate autonomously from the monostatic radar; others must be netted with the monostatic radar.

A convenient way to group these bistatic radar concepts is into four categories: hitchhiking, forward-scatter fences, hybrid radars, and clutter tuning. Concepts in the hitchhiking category exploit transmissions from other emitters, usually cooperative or noncooperative monostatic radars (called host radars), operate autonomously from the host radars, and detect targets in either the transmitter- or the receiver-centered ovals of Cassini. They often exploit the covert nature of a bistatic receiver for survivability enhancement in forward-based regions near the...
