A2.1 RACI Charting

Creating a RACI diagram is a technique for identifying key work activities and functional areas of responsibility associated with a specific task in a matrix format. By representing the work task activities in this fashion, the roles and responsibilities of the functions associated with each task can be clearly delineated.

This approach will work well if you are trying to clearly identify the work distribution between you, the work team, the client, and the external consultant. Although it takes time to build, it clearly displays the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the initiative. It can also be used to bring people back on track if you see roles and responsibilities beginning to conflict as the effort progresses.

A2.2 RACI Guidelines

RACI stands for responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed; the four levels of involvement that the various job roles have as a part of a change initiative or for that matter any work activity. The details associated with each are as follows:

  • Accountable. The position within the organization with sole (go / no go) authority over the specific task that is to be completed.

  • Responsible. These are the job roles that are working on the task. Responsibility can be shared among several roles or it may even be assigned to an "A" role.

  • Consulted. These job roles are consulted prior to the final decision or action. This requires two-way communications.

  • Informed. These job roles are informed about the decision or action. This does not have to...
