Improving Reliability and Maintenance from Within: How to be an Effective Internal Consultant

Appendix 1 has been included to provide details related to the Goal Achievement Model, a tool that can be used by the internal consultant in order to help clients achieve their vision. The information provided was extracted from my first book, Successfully Managing Change in Organizations: A Users Guide.
The Goal Achievement Model is a tool that links the goals, initiatives, and activities of the organization, department, team, and individuals to the overall vision. It makes these links in a way that all can easily see how their efforts contribute to the end result. The model also provides a global view a way to see how efforts by one group can affect or be affected by the efforts of others.
Goal achievement overcomes many of the problems associated with achieving an organization's desired "to be" end state. It provides a clear understanding of the vision and shows how goals, initiatives, and specific activities performed by the site personnel link to it. Goal achievement requires focus as well as coordination among departments and groups. By the very nature of this coordination, goal achievement provides feedback to the participants, relating what they are doing to the achievement of the vision.
The Goal Achievement Model (Figure A-1) illustrates the method. Before looking specifically at how the model works, let's first clearly define its key components: the vision, goals, initiatives, activities, and measures.
