Imagine that the work team for which you are providing internal consultant support has developed a work process that the team as well as management believes will drastically improve the reliability of the plant equipment and the maintenance work process. After working on this initiative for many months, the deployment plans are drawn up and the date is set. Everyone on the project team is very excited about the prospects for significant improvement. They are looking forward to having the plant become a pacesetter within the company and maybe even within the industry. However, in the team's haste to deploy the results of their hard work, they neglected several things.
The leadership in the field were never given the opportunity to learn about the revolutionizing changes as they were developed. Consequently, they never had to opportunity to buy in to them.
The existing work process was never evaluated in detail so that transition plans could be developed to migrate from the "as is" process to the "to be" process dictated by the change.
The organizational structure was not rebuilt to support the new initiative. The team erroneously believed that once the new process was implemented, the structure would adapt to it without any major readjustment.
