TABLE OF CONTENTS Electronic protection (EP) is part of the basic systems that enemy electronic countermeasures attempt to make ineffective. This preserves the use of the electromagnetic spectrum for friendly forces. EP was previously called electronic counter-counterrneasures (ECCMs). This is a very large field, so we will look at only a few typical cases.
Radars have EP features built in to make them less vulnerable to jamming, or particular types of jamming. For example, the Dicke-Fix receiver is a feature added to radars to prevent jamming by the technique called AGC jamming. A second radar example is the use of leading-edge tracking to overcome range gate pull-off jamming as discussed in Section 2.4.7.
Communication systems that use any type of low-probability-of-intercept (LPI) technique are doing so in part to make communication jamming much less effective. This is an excellent example of an EP technique.
