Introduction to Electronic Warfare Modeling and Simulation

In the modeling of an EW engagement, it is necessary to consider the following elements:
The characteristics of the area in which the engagement takes place (the gaming area);
The characteristics of the players in the engagement;
The way players move and react to each other during the engagement;
The point of view from which the engagement is to be observed;
The fidelity to which the engagement must be controlled;
The electronic interactions between the players in the engagement;
When to start and stop the engagement.
The gaming area is the space in which the players engage each other. Note that the gaming area can have many dimensions: location, frequency, and so on. The steps in construction of the model are as follows:
Design the gaming area. How much area does the action cover (including the elevation of the highest player)? From how far away can a player affect another player? What other dimensions must be considered in the model? (Usually time is included, and sometimes frequency or some other dimension must be considered.) What coordinate system is most convenient for the simulation to be run? Often a Cartesian coordinate system can be used ( x and y along a flat zero altitude surface and z for elevation), with zero being at one corner of the gaming area. Sometimes it is convenient to use polar or Cartesian coordinates centered on one player.
Add terrain elevations to the gaming area if appropriate.
