Chapter 3: Math for Simulation

There are four math concepts outlined in this chapter (all higher-level math above algebra is explained). The first is dB math required for the presentation of propagation-theory formulas. The second is spherical trigonometry to develop EW engagement models, you have to be able to rotate vectors in space using spherical trig. The third is the Poisson equation in order that you will be able to determine the probabilities required for the design of emulation devices. The fourth is digitization because almost everything is digital these days.

3.1 About dB

In radio propagation calculations, an integral part of EW modeling, we spend a lot of time manipulating widely varying signal strength numbers. Decibel (or dB) units are commonly used in dealing with signal strength values. EW modeling also requires dealing with antenna specifications and RCSs, both of which are usually expressed in dB-based units. Finally, there are a number of easy-to-use formulas relating to radio link and radar performance prediction. The inputs and outputs of these formulas must often be in dB form. Thus, a firm understanding of dB numbers and formulas is important; they will be used extensively through this book, as they are in all aspects of EW modeling and simulation.

Any number expressed in dB is logarithmic, which makes it convenient to compare values that may differ by many orders of magnitude. (Note that numbers in non-dB...
