Overview

The function of simulation in training is to provide a realistic operational experience by exposing trainees to the types of signals they will be expected to deal with under dangerous, real-world circumstances. Its principal value is to train the operator in a range of tasks that vary from simple "knobology" (i.e., What knob does what?) to the sophisticated use of EW equipment in extremely stressful situations. A secondary use of operator-interface simulation is to evaluate the adequacy of the operator interface provided by a system. (Are the system's controls and displays adequate to allow the operator to do the job that must be done?)

As with all training-related simulation, an EW simulator usually allows an instructor to control the difficulty of the student's training experience to meet the training objectives. Students typically progress from simple circumstances and tasks to complex ones, including the handling of system anomalies.

The only part of the situation (tactical environment, specific threats, friendly EW equipment) that matters in training simulation is what the operator actually sees, hears, and touches. No real signals or real equipment need be involved, although that is sometimes the best way to solve the training problem.

In the training role, a simulator is expected to provide signals no better and no worse than the student operator will see in the real world within the limitations of the equipment controls and displays and the operator's perception limitations.
