Introduction to Electronic Warfare Modeling and Simulation

Glossary

This glossary is not intended to cover the electronic warfare field; it focuses on the special terms associated with the EW modeling and simulation field. The definitions are specific to this field.

Antenna scan
The angular motion of an antenna in its coverage of a spatial volume. In simulation, there is a strong focus on the time versus received power for threat emitter scans from the point of view of an EW receiver.
Emulation
The generation of signals in a form appropriate for the testing of receiving systems or parts of those systems. If the emulated signal is injected into the middle of an EW receiver, it represents what a transmitted threat signal would look like when it arrives at that point in the system including the effects of the tactical situation and the status of all upstream hardware.
Emulation injection
An emulated signal is input to the threat generation, propagation, reception, processing stream at an "injection point." This point can be at the enemy transmitter, at the output of the enemy antenna, at the friendly receiver antenna, at the receiver, at the receiver's IF or video circuitry, at a digital processor, or at the systems displays.
Engagement
The series of events in which an enemy asset (e.g., a radar or missile) interacts with a friendly asset (a receiver, a platform, etc.).
Equipment anomalies
Unintended effects of (usually friendly) equipment that cause the output to be other than intended by the designer. This can include spurious responses, data distortion, incorrect outputs...
