Every elementary substance is made up of exceedingly small particles called atoms which are all alike and which cannot be further subdivided or broken up by chemical processes. It will be noted that this statement is virtually a definition of the term elementary substance and a limitation of the term chemical process. There are as many different classes or families of atoms as there are chemical elements. See Table 6.1.1.
