Chapter 2: Machine Design Questions and Answers

Overview

Q2-1

It is desired to check the design of a 2-in. medium steel shaft subjected to a turning moment of 40,000 in.-lb. Ultimate stress is 50,000.

Q2-2

A hydraulic turbine in a water-power plant is rated at 12,000 hp. The steel vertical shaft connecting the turbine and generator is 24 in. in diameter and rotates at 60 rpm. Calculate the maximum shearing stress developed in the shaft at full load.

Q2-3

An automobile weighing 3,000 lb is slowed uniformly from 40 to 10 mph in a distance of 100 ft by a brake on the drive shaft. Rear wheels are 28 in. in diameter. Drive-shaft diameter is 1 in. Ratio of differential is 40:11. Calculate extreme fiber stress in drive shaft, neglecting tire, bearing, and gear losses.

Q2-4

A circular bar of solid cast iron 60 in. long carries a solid circular head 60 in. in diameter. The bar is subjected to a torsional moment of 60,000 in.-lb which is supplied at one end. It is desired to keep the torsional deflection of the circular head below 1/32 in. when the bar is transmitting power over its entire length in order to prevent the chattering of the piece. What would be the diameter of the bar if the working stress is taken as 3,000 psi and the transverse modulus of elasticity is 6 million psi?

Q2-5

A 1 13/16-in.-diameter steel shaft is supported on bearings 6 ft apart. A 24-in.-diameter pulley weighing 50 lb is attached to the center...
