Supplement T Production Engineering

Questions and Answers

The NCEE Task Analysis Survey surfaced areas of professional practice which are now being incorporated into the fabric of the examination for mechanical engineering. This area of the examination, called management or production engineering, includes problem situations that represent professional situations that a mechanical engineer may encounter relating to any of the following: tool and jig design, maintenance management, manufacturing, materials handling, plant design, fire protection, and metal fabrication. This supplement provides a sampling of this area.

T-1

A cutting tool is designed for a nominal 2-in-diameter by 3-in-long round hole. The pitch of the teeth is 0.700 in, and each roughing tooth is 0.004 in larger in diameter than the one that cuts just before it. The tool is to remove a maximum of 0.15 in from the ID of the hole.

  1. Determine the number of teeth the cutting tool should have.

  2. The cutting tool is placed into service on a hydraulic cutting tool machine with a cylinder pressure of 1000 lb/in 2 when pulling at its rated capacity of 30 tons. The force to move the ram under no load is negligible. A gauge shows a pressure of 700 lb/in 2 in the cylinder when the tool is cutting fully as intended. Determine the specific cutting pressure of this tool in the material being cut.

  3. The cutting-tool material has a working strength of 60,000 lb/in 2. Determine the minimum diameter of the space between the teeth of the tool.
