Questions and Answers

An acceptance test on a boiler shows that its induced-draft fan handles 600,000 lb per hr of flue gas at 290 F against a friction of 10 in. WG. The boiler is located afterwards to a spot where the barometric pressure is 24 in. Hg and not the original 30 in. Hg at sea level. With no changes made to the equipment except adjustments to the fan and with gas weights and temperature the same as before, what are the new volume and suction conditions for the fan design and relocation?

The allowable concentration in a certain boiler drum is 2,000 ppm. Pure condensate is fed to the drum at the rate of 85,000 gallons per hour (gph). Make-up, containing 50 grains per gal of sludge-producing impurities, is also delivered to the drum at the rate of 1,500 gph. Calculate the blowdown as a percentage of the boiler steaming capacity.

A process industry is studying the economics of a single-effect vs. a double-effect evaporation. Motive steam is available at 150 psia, dry and saturated; raw water from underground wells is in ample supply at a temperature which may be assumed constant at 60 F. Final evaporator product will be condensed at atmospheric pressure. Calculate the ratio of evaporator product to pounds of motive steam for ( a) single-effect evaporation and ( b) for double-effect evaporation.

Superheated steam is generated at 1,350 psia and 950 F. It is to be used in a certain process...
