Mechanical Engineering License Review, Fifth Edition

A steam engine is a reciprocating machine having displacement in which work is done by a piston acted upon by pressure and moving it. Steam engines are generally classified as to construction, operation, or type of valve gear. The construction may be horizontal, vertical, or angular. They may be single-acting, double-acting, reciprocating, or rotary. Their operation may be condensing, noncondensing, bleeder, or extraction, simple or multiple stage.
According to the type of valves employed, the classification may be divided into simple, compound, uniflow, D-shaped slide valve, rotary valves, poppet, and piston valves.
| Q9-1 | A simple double-acting steam engine of 15-in. bore, 16-in. stroke, and 2.5-in.-diameter piston rod is operating at 225 rpm. Find the indicated horsepower if the scale or range of the spring used is 80 psi and the mean effective pressure determined by the usual method is 25.3 at the head end and 25.9 at the crank end. |
