Signal Processing for Wireless Communications

Chapter 9: 3G and Beyond Discussion

In this chapter, we will discuss some evolutionary paths for the WCDMA 3G digital cellular system. We will begin by discussing the principles of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) since this has been chosen as the radio access technology of the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). The Mobile TV delivery mechanism is presently being worked upon within the technical arena; the competition between dedicated single frequency networks versus shared frequency services will be introduced in this chapter. While on this topic, we present the Digital Video Broadcasting for handhelds (DVB-H) system that will be supplying Mobile TV to the end user, among other packet data services.

Since the Internet Protocol (IP) is increasingly becoming a mainstream interface to delivery platforms, we will present how 3G digital cellular systems address this increasing packet access need. The high-speed packet access (HSPA) evolution will be discussed as a means to achieving the aforementioned voice and data IP services. The evolution will consist of advanced receivers, higher-order modulation, broadcast and multicast services, packet connectivity, as well as other items. Lastly, we will briefly show the benefits of using multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems to increase the system throughput and capacity of a wireless system. We hope to provide some insight into how the channel conditions affect the MIMO system capacity benefits.

9.1 INTRODUCTION

In recent years a variety of wireless systems have used OFDM to provide reliable communications. These systems range from satellite to terrestrial environments encompassing broadcasting such as Digital...
