Description
Capacitive / RF Admittance Level Transmitters are devices used to measure the level of materials within a container. They operate by detecting changes in capacitance caused by the presence of a material between the sensor's electrodes. These transmitters are capable of providing continuous level measurement by converting the detected level into a proportional signal suitable for process control applications.
Working Principle
Capacitive / RF Admittance Level Transmitters work by utilizing a coaxial capacitor design. The sensor consists of a conductor coated with an isolating layer to prevent short circuits. As the level of material in the tank changes, it alters the dielectric constant between the sensor's conductors, thereby changing the capacitance. This change in capacitance is linearly related to the level of the material. The sensors are particularly useful because they can detect levels regardless of the fluid composition and are relatively simple to install. They rely on the dielectric properties of air and the media to detect level changes, making them versatile for various applications.

Capacitive sensors are widely used across multiple industries. Specific examples include their use in the chemical industry for monitoring liquid levels in reactors, in the food industry for managing ingredient levels in processing tanks, in water treatment facilities for measuring water levels in storage tanks, in power plants for monitoring coolant levels, and in breweries for tracking fermentation levels.
Advantages over other Level Transmitters
Capacitive / RF Admittance Level Transmitters offer several advantages over other types of level transmitters. They are easy to install and ideal for use with slurries and liquids containing solid particles. Unlike some other technologies, they can detect levels regardless of the fluid composition, which makes them versatile. Additionally, they can be produced in various lengths up to several hundred feet with minimal impact on cost, providing flexibility in different applications.
Limitations
These transmitters have specific limitations. They can be difficult to use with non-metallic tanks, and the dielectric constant of the material being measured limits the measuring range. The probes must be relatively long, and bare cable electrodes should not come into contact with conductive fluids or the tank wall to avoid short circuits. Additionally, capacitance is temperature-dependent, so a temperature sensor should always be present to ensure accurate measurements.
Considerations

Initial costs can vary depending on the length and configuration of the sensor. Operating expenses are generally low due to the simplicity of the technology. Durability is high, but proper installation and grounding are crucial to prevent issues. Accuracy can be affected by temperature changes, so temperature compensation is necessary. Replacement and maintenance costs are typically low, but regular checks are recommended to ensure the sensor's integrity and performance.
