Understanding Lasers

Chapter 5: Optics and Laser Accessories

ABOUT THIS CHAPTER

Many types of optical devices help lasers perform useful functions. This chapter is a brief introduction to the field, running the gamut from simple lenses to emerging concepts such as photonic crystals. It explains basic concepts but not all the details. We will start with lenses and simple optics, then describe special-purpose optics, nonlinear devices, modulation, pulse generation, measurement, and some emerging technologies

5.1 CLASSICAL OPTICAL DEVICES

In Chapter 2, you learned the basic concepts of how lenses and mirrors refract and reflect light. These are the foundation of the field called classical optics because it is based on concepts developed long ago. In this chapter, you will learn more about how optical devices can manipulate laser beams, both as individual optical elements and as components inside more complex optical equipment and instruments. The coverage is brief because the subject of classical optics would require a book in itself.

We will start from where we left off in Chapter 2. Our descriptions largely consider laser beams as bundles of parallel rays of light, as if they were emitted by an object an infinite distance away.
