9.12 SILICON LASERS

If you have been following press reports over the past few years, you may wonder why silicon lasers have not been described yet. The reason is that these much-hyped developments are not really diode lasers. They actually are optically pumped Raman lasers, similar to the fiber Raman lasers described in Chapter 8, or hybrids in which the emission comes from a III V compound. These developmental devices are covered in Section 10.5.
