9.13.3 Pump Lasers

Packaging of pump lasers depends on power levels. Single-stripe or wide-area pump lasers may be coupled into optical fibers. Multistripe arrays or stacks of arrays are packaged in structures that focus light onto a laser rod (typically onto the side), and cool the diode stacks to maintain stable operation. One compact example is shown in Figure 9-22; it can emit a continuous 6-W beam. As you would expect, the higher the power level, the more cooling is required; the highest powers require active cooling systems.
