CAS: 106-89-8
DOT ID: UN2023
Hazard Class or Division: 6.1 (POISONOUS/TOXIC MATERIALS)
ERG Guide: 131
Formula: C 3H 5ClO
RTECS No: TX4900000
Properties: Highly flammable watery, liquid. Clear, colorless. Irritating, sweet garlic or chloroform-like odor. Sinks and is moderately soluble in water. Vapor is heavier than air; will collect in low areas. Combustion products include toxic hydrogen chloride.
Uses: Solvent for resins, enamels, lacquers, paints, varnishes, gums,, high wet-strength resins, cellulose esters; as co-stabilizer to enhance performance of mixed-metals; raw material for epoxy and phenoxy resins.
HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION
IDLH: 75ppm. [Ca]
IARC: Group 2A, possible human carcinogen; animal evidence, sufficient.
NTP: Anticipated human carcinogen.
Odor threshold: 0.308 mg/m 3.
OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant
NIOSH Criteria Document: NIOSH 76-206
Chemical protective clothing is recommended because vapor and liquid can be dermally absorbed and may contribute to systemic toxicity. Vapor is a severe eye and respiratory tract irritant; personnel will find high concentrations (above 40 ppm) unpleasant. Contact with the liquid causes severe eye irritant. If spilled on clothing and allowed to remain, may cause severe irritation, smarting, and reddening of the skin.
