Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008

Chapter 14: The Tool Chest Parts Lists and Part Builder

Overview

Before you can begin modeling and designing your pipe network, which will be discussed in Chapter 15, consider what components you will need in your design. Civil 3D allows you to build a parts list that contains the specific pipes and structures that you will need at your fingertips while designing a pipe network. Civil 3D installs a large part catalog as well as an interface for customizing pipe network parts if necessary. In addition, the parts list will allow you to specify how each pipe and structure will look and behave in a design situation. This chapter explores creating a parts list for a typical sanitary sewer network.

By the end of this chapter, you'll be able to:

  • Add pipe and structure families to a new parts list

  • Create rule sets that apply to pipes and structures in a parts list

  • Apply styles to pipes and structures in a parts list

Planning a Typical Pipe Network: A Sanitary Sewer Example

Before you begin designing your pipe network, it is important to brainstorm all of the parts that you will need to construct the network, how these objects will be represented in plan and profile, and the behavior of these parts (which you'll specify using the slope, cover, rim, and sump parameters). Once you have a list of the elements you need, you can locate the appropriate parts in the part catalog, build the appropriate rule sets, create the proper styles to match your CAD standard, and tie...
