From Understanding Lasers
9.13.4 Other Diode Laser Packaging As visible diode lasers have come to replace helium neon lasers in applications that require visible light, the diodes have been packaged with optics that focus the light to produce a tightly focused beam. Examples are laser pointers and supermarket scanners, which require highly directional beams. The user sees a small packaged laser that emits a red beam and functions much like a much larger and more expensive helium neon laser. ![]()

Helium neon (HeNe) lasers have an emission that is determined by neon atoms by virtue of a resonant transfer of excitation of helium. They operate continuously in the red, infrared and far-infrared regions and emit highly monochromatic radiation.
