Coating Thickness Thickness Gages
Description
Coating Thickness Gages are instruments designed to measure the thickness of coatings applied to various substrates. These devices provide precise measurements that are crucial for ensuring the quality and durability of coated products.
Working Principle
Coating Thickness Gages operate primarily using two methods: magnetic induction and eddy-current. The magnetic induction method is used for measuring non-magnetic coatings over ferrous substrates and magnetic coatings over non-magnetic substrates. It involves placing a probe on the surface to measure the linear distance between the probe tip and the base substrate. Inside the probe, a coil generates a changing magnetic field, and the alteration in magnetic flux density is measured by a secondary coil, which then provides a digital reading of the coating thickness.
The eddy-current method is used for measuring non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous conductive substrates and some non-ferrous metal coatings on non-ferrous metals. This method also uses a probe containing a coil driven by a high-frequency oscillator to generate an alternating field. When this field is near a metallic conductor, eddy currents are generated, causing an impedance change in the probe coil. The coating thickness is determined by this impedance change, displayed as a digital reading.
These methods are useful because they provide non-destructive, accurate, and repeatable measurements, which are essential for quality control and product liability documentation.
Applications
Coating Thickness Gages are used in a variety of applications, including measuring liquid or powder coatings and plated finishes such as chrome, zinc, cadmium, or phosphate over steel or iron substrates. They are also used for coatings over aluminum and non-magnetic stainless steel, as well as anodized aluminum. In the automotive industry, for example, they are used to measure the thickness of paint and galvanize layers on vehicle bodies, where zinc thicknesses range from zero to 10 µm and paint thicknesses up to 150 µm.
Advantages over other Thickness Gages
Coating Thickness Gages that combine both magnetic induction and eddy-current methods offer versatility, allowing users to perform multiple measurement tasks without switching devices. They are low-cost, easy to operate, and provide instantaneous digital readings. Some advanced models store measurements and provide statistical data, enhancing their utility in quality control processes.
Limitations
One limitation of Coating Thickness Gages is that not all parts can be measured using a gage with a built-in probe. The shape of the part, curvature, edge effect, surface roughness, substrate thickness, permeability, and conductivity can influence measurement accuracy. These factors require proper calibration to ensure precise measurements.
Considerations
When selecting a Coating Thickness Gage, consider the initial cost and operating expenses, which are generally low. Durability and accuracy are key factors, as these devices need to withstand various environmental conditions while providing precise measurements. Replacement and maintenance costs should also be considered, especially for models with separate probes that may require periodic calibration or replacement to maintain accuracy.
