TABLE OF CONTENTS Voltimum is an electrical contractor's portal launched by some of the major players in the electrical industry Philips, Pirelli, Osram, Schnieder Electric, Nexans ABB and Legrand. The main feature of Voltimum is the ability for electrical contractors to log on and find out real-time information about electrical products for the design, specification and estimation of electrical projects. The site also contains up-to-date legislation and industry news. Sprite Interactive was commissioned to develop a mobile window to the site. This took the form of a Java application, enabling us to serve up product data to the user's handset in real time. As well as the WAP site, Voltimum wanted to extend their mobile offering with an MMS scanning service.
The final solution was template-driven we developed one universal template, product page templates for different product categories and a legislation page template. The products on the site are indexed by brand and product type. For each product category we identified which product data would be most important to the user, to be fed through to the Java application taking into account the space constraints of the mobile phone. Voltimum has provided an xml data feed to Sprite for the products and this updates the list on the phone in real time, enabling Voltimum to add or remove products and update descriptions.
