Inserting Markers

Markers are often needed to indicate a specific point on the timeline that requires an edit, to serve as a cue, to insert metadata, and for many other helpful uses. Vegas 5 allows for three different types of markers:

  • Markers reference points to be returned to later, which identify timing or act as a reminder for later edits. Markers can be inserted on the timeline or in the Trimmer. Markers can be named at any time.

  • Regions defined sections on the timeline. Regions can behave as permanent indicators of a selection either in the Trimmer or on the timeline. Regions can act as reminders of specific sections to be returned to later or can act as edit length indicators in the Trimmer. Regions can be named at any point in time. All training materials on the CD contained in this book are built with regions.

  • Command markers used to insert metadata in streaming media files. Text data, such as lyrics, promotional information, URL locations, and closed captions, can be embedded with command markers. (See Chapter 10 for more information.)

Markers and regions can remain with the audio file when inserted in the Trimmer tool. The OPTIONS PREFERENCES GENERAL dialog has a check box to automatically save markers and regions in the Trimmer tool.
