Learning Activity 10 2: Lead/Manage

Goals

The goals of this activity are to

  • think about the difference between managing and leading

  • build rapport and trust among participants.

Materials

  • PowerPoint Item PowerPoint Slides 8 7 to 8 10

  • Handout Handout 11 1: The 10 Leadership Competencies

  • blank paper and pen/pencil for each participant

Time

  • Clock 20 minutes

Instructions

Ask people to work with the others at their table (preferably three to five participants). The leader of each team will be the person with the most children, and the tiebreaker will be the greatest number of pets. Explain that you will give each team an opportunity to brainstorm and write down as many word associations as possible for Lead and Manage. When you say go , they will have one minute to brainstorm as many words as possible that describe Lead. When you say to switch, they will have another minute to brainstorm as many words as possible that describe Manage. Here s an example:

After the brainstorming is over, ask for two volunteers a right-handed person and a left-handed person. Put the left-handed person on the right side of the flipchart and the right-handed volunteer on the left side. Explain that you are going to gather the results of the brainstorming by asking each group to quickly share one word association for each term. The left-handed volunteer will log the Lead words, the right-handed person will log the Manage words. With your help, they should be able to move through this very quickly. Go...
